Money can be a touchy subject in church life, but it doesn’t need to be. At Springhill, we give not to hoard wealth or to build glorious buildings but to support the mission of the church. We do not promise that those who give will be financially blessed, though some are. We also don’t beg for money or make non-givers feel guilty. Rather, we affirm what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 8:9-10a (ESV): “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you.” Our true riches as individuals and as a body come from the sacrificial death of Jesus, which paid for our sin. Yet, we agree with Paul that giving to support the church benefits the giver, often by relinquishing us from the lure of wealth.
With a biblical perspective on giving in mind, we challenge the members of Springhill to generously and joyfully support the mission of the church. No matter what the current giving level of a family or individual is, we encourage them to take it to the next level and to trust in the God who provides even for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field (Matt 6:26-28). In response, the pastors and leadership of the church provide regular updates and complete transparency, so that all may be accountable and above reproach.
